CB Christmas Gift Guide: 3 fantastic Single Malt Whisky experiences

The Christmas season has officially started! The Collectorbits Christmas Gift Guide series offers gift recommendations for those who love both whisky and wine. Here are Collectorbits’ top 3 Christmas gift packages for those who want to gift a good bottle of single malt combined with an even better experience.

Glendronach and the Sherry Masterclass

Glendronach distillery is a Scottish whisky distillery located in the Highland whisky district. It was owned by the BenRiach Distillery Company Ltd., but was purchased by Brown-Forman Corporation in 2016.

The distillery, founded in 1826, draws its water from the Dronac burn within the distillery grounds. It has its own floor maltings and two wash stills in addition to two spirit stills.

The whisky: The 18-year-old GlenDronach whisky was named after the renowned founder of the distillery, James Allardice. This exceptional sherried single malt is non chill filtered, of natural colour, and matured in the finest Spanish Oloroso sherry casks. The whisky even won the Gold Metal in the 2017 World Whiskies Awards. Available at The Whisky Shop for £96.04.

The experience: Delve into the rich history of sherry casks in Scotland and discover how the GlenDronach mastered the art of sherry cask maturation since 1826 in their 1.5-hour Masterclass.

Why not extend this gift with a package that also includes exploring the nature nearby with a couple of nights in this beautiful five star B&B? Get active and discover what the Cairngorms National Park has to offer!

Smoky whiskies and epic golf sessions

The south coast of the Isle of Islay is home to the famous Kildalton distilleries: Lagavulin, Laphroaig and Ardbeg. These are only a few of the nine distilleries that perfect their whisky every day.

Producing whisky since 1798, today Ardbeg is owned by Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy, and produces a heavily peated Islay whisky.

The whisky: One of Ardbeg’s famous whiskies Uigeadail, pronounced ‘Oog-a-dal’, is a special vatting that marries Ardbeg’s traditional deep, smoky notes with luscious, raisiny tones of old ex-Sherry casks. Ardbeg Uigeadail was voted by the 120,000+ strong Ardbeg Committee as their favourite Ardbeg and has won several awards, including “double gold” in San Francisco’s World Spirits Competition 2018. Available at The Whisky Shop for £67.00.

The experience: How about a gift package, including distillery tours in the region with a nice bottle of Ardbeg’s Uigeadail and a couple of nights in a great hotel nearby? For golf enthusiasts this amazing golf hotel, that is only 15 minutes away from the famous distilleries, will round up the epic experience!

Glen Grant and the Victorian Garden

Founded in 1840, Glen Grant is a distillery located in Rothes, Speyside. The distillery produces single malt Scotch whisky. Nowadays the distillery is owned by the Italian company Campari Group.

The whisky: Part of Glen Grant’s relaunched range in 2016, the 18-year-old whisky is rich and complex with notes of caramel, raisins and vanilla. It’s a great whisky for fans of Speyside whiskies with numerous layers of sweet flavours. The notorious 2019 Whisky Bible by Jim Murray has placed the Glen Grant 18-year-old whisky as the “Second Finest Whisky Of The Year”. Available at small merchants, starting from £100.

The experience: Glen Grant’s Distillery has a unique highlight to offer: a recently restored Victorian Garden built by James Grant to celebrate the natural beauty of the area. Why not follow the small path through the garden whilst having the pleasure of observing the colourful flower beds and lawns? A flowing stream runs under this small path, which leads to a little cave where Major Grant kept his own private Glen Grant barrel. Or how about taking a distillery tour to discover the true personality of Glen Grant’s Single Malt Whiskies?

Check out this lovely four star hotel, just next door to the distillery. As a bonus tip, check out The Quaich Bar, home to 900 single-malt whiskies from across the globe.

If the gift includes the destination Speyside, make sure to check out the collectorbits whisky trail; if the destination is going to be Islay, the islay festival shouldn’t be missed!
